A Conversation with Mohri Suzuki
This conversation took place while Mohri Suzuki was visiting the Philippines, where he had traveled to attend a family gathering.
In this Journal, we talk about timing — how the meaning of words can change depending on when they are written, when they are shown, and when we encounter them.
Q. So the meaning of a work is not determined only by what is written?
I don’t think so.
Even when two people are having a conversation, the same words can be received very differently depending on when they are spoken.
Calligraphy may be similar.
It is not only about whether the words themselves are good. There is a relationship between the words, the person writing them, the person seeing them, and the moment in which they meet.
When those things resonate with one another, perhaps the words begin to carry a different kind of meaning.
That is something I think about when deciding when to present a work.
Q. Why did you decide to hold an exhibition in Ginza this December?
It has been some time since I held an exhibition devoted simply to my calligraphy, and I would like to make it something I do once a year.
The end of the year feels like a particularly good time to me.
We look at words and think back over the year we have lived. I can express through writing what I have felt during that year, and perhaps there are things in those words that others can share or recognize in their own lives.
The season matters too.
There is something about the end of the year — and perhaps it is better when it is cold.
(laughs)
I like the idea of people coming in from the cold, spending some time with the words, and reflecting on their own year.
Q. You are speaking to us from the Philippines. Has being there made you think about anything differently?
One thought I wrote down while I was here was:
We are all part of one great family in this larger home we call the world.
I came here for my aunt’s annual gathering. Family members were there, but so were employees, neighbors, and many other people. Everyone came together and celebrated.
Watching them, I found myself thinking about this idea of a large family.
I have also been fortunate to travel to different places over the years, and those experiences have stayed with me.
Beyond religion, nationality, or ethnicity, there are moments when I simply feel grateful for the connections between people.
Q. Was there a particular phrase that came to you during this trip?
Yes. I wrote this down:
Never forget that the time someone gives to you is a part of their life.
When someone spends time for you, that time is something they can never take back. In that sense, it is part of their life.
I want to remember that.
But I don’t yet know when I will write these words as a work of calligraphy.
That is also part of what we have been talking about.
Having the words does not necessarily mean that now is the moment to write them.
Sometimes the words arrive first.
Then I wait for the moment when I am ready to give them form.
